Bleeding gums can be a sign of gum disease, do not ignore it, Surrey dentist explains

12 August 2012

If you experience bleeding gums while you are brushing you teeth, don’t consider it as normal. A Surrey dentist specialising in gum disease treatment explains: the bleeding is a disease process called gingivitis. It is caused by bacteria and if not cured can cause tooth loss and some serious health conditions. These include systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, and bacterial pneumonia.

If gums are not treated at this stage, it can progress to a more serious condition called periodontitis (gum disease). This is when the gums and bones are seriously affected. If the gum disease progresses to a more advance level the chances of tooth loss will increase dramatically.

The good news is that periodontal disease is the most preventable disease, and if proper measures are taken at early stages you can likely reduce your risk of losing teeth and a number of other serious health concerns.

Treatment is easy: a thorough scale and polish, by a dentist or hygienist, can treat the problem. In this case, prevention is not only better than cure but also less expensive. So, the warning message is: do not hesitate to treat gum problems at early stages. This can save you a lot on dental and medical bills in the long run.
